Part I: Conflict within teams

The conflict I have discussed in this article is an incident that happened over power and position in the team. The team leader and manager didn’t allow me to express my views, kept finding faults, escalated complain against me that I am not performing even though I was contributing, suppressed my performance and never highlighted my achievements. After I reached a point of saturation, I started confronting the team leader and managers to know the reasons for their behavior but eventually, it led to conflict. Even though I wasn’t the favorite member for the team leader and manager, they didn’t allow me to switch projects as my expertise and contribution were required for the success of the project.

Later when I analyzed the whole situation, I realized that uncertainty among my team leader and manager had led to this conflict. The main source for conflict was interpersonal, power, organizational and poor communication. The major reason was the team members of my team, members of other teams, senior manager and director were discussing critical issues with me directly due to my expertise and consistent performances, which could have triggered the uncertainty in the mind of my team leader and manager. Hence, they always suppressed my performance during the performance evaluation, didn’t allow me to express my views in meetings/discussions and forced me to keep a low profile even though I was contributing towards the team success. As these incidents were happening frequently, the director and senior manager had a discussion with me regarding the problem. They were aware of my expertise and the contributions towards the project.

The manager and team leader who disliked me started to have a good relationship with me after I was promoted and changed to a different project where I was directly reporting to the director.

The conflict I had with team leader and manager could have been intervened by recognizing the occurrence of conflict, finding the root cause for the conflict, explaining the situation by focusing on the bigger picture, actively listening to each other point of view, having a reality check leaving out personal ego, find the true impairment, setting ground rules, understanding the whole issues clearly, together determine the issue, analyze the issue together, find a solution together and if required get some mentoring session or involve an HR to resolve the issue for the betterment of team success.

Part 2 Creativity in teams

Creativity is defined as a process to generate new and ingenious ideas that are perceptible to solve a problem or in making decisions. It is a way to see the problem in an, unlike way to generate unimaginable solution/ideas. There are several parameters to evaluate creativity depending on the field. To evaluate my creativity, the indices I used are originality, appropriateness, fluency, adaptability, and flexibility. After evaluation, it was found that it can be enhanced in various ways. Few of the strategies that will help me to enhance creativity are becoming knowledge in the field, practicing openness in thinking, asking myself new questions that will probe ideas, incubating ideas, redefining the problem, focusing on areas that are neglected by others, making time for cohesive creative thinking, brainstorming, training and creating an environment that will encourage creative thinking.

Differences and discrepancy are part and pause of the teamwork. Immediately the group member is attached to a common task they eventually realize that achieving the common goal is not an easy task. Team conflict is dangerous because it may end up killing the group and also the goals as well. To measure creativity, it is good to think the following three indices that is; technology, talent, and tolerance. The ability of the person’s investment level, research and development, are based on technology. Technology enhances creativity because by use of technological advancement transforms ideas very quickly. Talents is another measure of creativity. Although it seems to be a natural gift can also be improved through continuous practice. The last index is tolerance. This measures how patient one is for example, regarding waiting for those ideas to turn into realities.
