Theories of PNI

Fascination with the body’s overall functioning has compelled researchers and practitioners to theoretically deconstruct and reconstruct the body over many centuries. That fascination endures from interest in how the body’s mental, immunological, hormonal, and psychological systems influence and interact with one another. As a result, it might be difficult to imagine the links among these systems identified in psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) as a new field of study. Based on this underlying theory, contributing theorists from various fields continue to build on the study of PNI to de-compartmentalize the body’s systems in the treatment and prevention of disease.

For this Assignment, select one of the following theorists who has a theory that aligns well with your understanding of the mind-body connection’s influence on health:

  • Walter Cannon: Fight or Flight Response; Homeostasis
  • R. Lazarus and Susan Folkman: Ways of Coping George Solomon: Connections Between Emotions, Stress and Immune Function
  • Richard Lazarus: Emotional Appraisal of Stress before Biological Response
  • Niels Jerne: Immune system tolerance to “self” tissues influencing development of autoimmune diseases, and T and B cell communication
  • Hans Seyle: General Adaptation Syndrome, Stress and Eustress
  • Robert Ader: Psychoneuroimmunology
  • Ivan Pavlov: Conditioned Response of Automatic Biological Functions

Then, search the Walden Library for at least two research studies that challenge a theory associated with the theorist you selected. Consider how the research addresses that theory and whether it changes your understanding of the mind-body connection’s influence on health. Finally, think about the influence that theory and the research it generated might have on your practice as a health psychology professional.

The Assignment (3–5 pages):

Submit an APA-formatted essay that includes the following:

  • A description of the theorist and the theory you selected that most agrees with your understanding of the mind-body connection’s influence on health
  • An explanation of at least two research studies that challenge the theory you selected
  • An explanation of your conclusions based on the studies that critique the research based on that theory
  • An explanation of the influence this theory and the research it generated might have on your practice as a health psychology professional
