Report 1: Prepare a report with appropriate data tables to analyze basic demographic and socioeconomic changes in a particular county between 2000 and the most recent year available. In most cases it will be 2016.

1. Choose a county in the US. Provide a brief overview of the area: where is it located, what is the major city, brief history, what is the county known for, etc.

2. Access the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) Regional State and Local Area Personal Income and Employment datasets:
Using the income and population table (CA1) under the “LOCAL AREA PERSONAL INCOME AND EMPLOYMENT” heading, pull data on personal income, population and per capita income. Pull the same variables for the state in which the county is located.

3. Access U.S. Census Bureau’s American Fact Finder (Advanced Search)…
Pull 2000 and 2016 data for the percent of the population 25 years and over with a bachelor’s degree or higher and Percent of the population 25 years and over who is a high school graduate or higher. Pull the same variable for the state in which the county is located. (Use ACS five year estimates for 2016 and decennial census for 2000)

4. Using the Fact Finder, access County Business Patterns tables. Pull 2000 and 2015 data (NAICs 2 -digit classification) for Total, Manufacturing, Retail, and at least two other industries. Make sure that you have pulled data on the three largest industries in the county. For employment and number of establishments, calculate the difference between 2000 and 2015, percent change between 2000 and 2015, and percent of total for each year. Calculate the location quotient for each selected industry in 2000 and 2015. You will need to pull data for the state to do this calculation. Show this information in a table and discuss relevant changes in your report.

5. Access U.S. Census Bureau’s Small Area Incomeand Poverty Estimates Pull 2000 and 2016 data for median household income and all ages in poverty (percent). This last indicator is the poverty rate.

6. Access U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Pull the Consumer Price Index (CPI) : All Urban Consumers, Current Series for 2000 and 2016

7. Create a table with the following: 2000 variables, 2016 variables (or most recent year), difference between 2000 and 2016, percent change between 2000 and 2016. For some of the variables, you will also want to calculate the variables as a percent of total. Variables measured in dollars should be adjusted for inflation. Please adjust to 2016 purchasing power. I will review adjusting for inflation using the CPI in class.

8. What other information and comparisons would be useful in order to further illustrate the story of what happened in your chosen county between 2000 and 2016? You do not have to pull additional data, but think about the questions that your analysis has raised and what data you would need to address these issues. Include a paragraph addressing this issue in your report.

9. Prepare a short report (3-5 pages including tables and graphs) analyzing the changes. This should include a table with data and relevant calculations and a written analysis of relevant changes. You do not have to discuss every variable in your report. You need to figure out how to organize this report; a bullet list is not acceptable. Tell me a story of what happened in the county over time and use the data you pulled and the statistics you calculated as evidence in order to back up your story.
