Population health managers often have clinical data available from their acute care patients’ discharge records and electronic medical records (EMRs). They may not have access to basic incidence and prevalence data for their sub-population. To enhance their decision-making process, they seek more than the basic morbidity, mortality, and injury data that is often available from state databases. This week’s Assignment requires you to drill down typical data using common rate formulas. The most common filters are age, race, and gender in addition to targeting a specific disease or type of injury. As you review this week’s resources and complete the Assignment, you might consider the implications of this data when examining the health of populations and the ways it might be used for management decisions.

To prepare:

  • Review this week’s Resources and download the Week 2 Assignment 1 Template to complete this Assignment.
  • Review Chapter 2 in Caron (2017), and consider how the public health concepts of mortality, morbidity, epidemics, and surveillance form a basis for epidemiological calculations.
  • Review Chapter 3 in Caron (2017) to understand the rationale and the application of rates to help define the health status of a population.
  • Focus on the descriptive epidemiology tools of crude (mortality, morbidity, specific age and disease), and Proportionate Mortality Ratio (PMR).
  • Examine the table on p. 141 of Caron (2017), “All Causes and Unintentional Injury Mortality and Estimated Population by Age Group, for Both Sexes and for Males Alone – United States, 2002.”
  • If helpful, review and complete the practice exercises found in Chapter 5 of Caron (2017).

The Assignment (2-3 pages):

Complete the calculations and provide a 1-page summary interpretation of your results on the Week 2 Assignment 1 Template provided in the Resources.
