Throughout this course, you have been concentrating on individual plays and focusing on specific aspects of Elizabethan culture to arrive at a richer and more robust understanding of Shakespeare’s work.
In this Final Paper, you will synthesize your ideas about a selected core concept (listed below) as it manifests itself in two of the assigned plays from this course. Your paper should note the impact of the aesthetic construction of these plays by leveraging outside sources as well as your own values and beliefs.
First, select one of the following recurring core concepts in Shakespeare’s work and provide a thorough explanation of its meaning:
Power and sovereignty
The alienation of the outsider
The tragic hero
Guilt and the quest for redemption
The role of the supernatural and magic
Be sure to present a well-developed sense of what this core concept reflects or how it relates to the specific cultural context of the Elizabethan period.
Then, trace the development of your selected core concept in at least two of the assigned plays from this course. You must make clear statements about the relationship of each play to the core concept, and you must utilize scholarly support for these statements in addition to referencing specific lines and passages from the plays themselves. It may be appropriate to use material you have already written in this course when constructing the Final Paper. Ask your instructor for specific clarification and restrictions.
For this assignment, you are to look for a scholarly source that you find interesting and relevant to the plays as well as the selected core concept. Choose from the sources bundled in the ENG303 Research Guide website (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. for help finding appropriate sources.
