You are a parent who is concerned about the new state-mandated, textbook-based curriculum for kindergarten, and you are writing a letter to the school board in protest of this new policy. In your letter, define DAP, describe the benefits of DAP, and explain
why you feel the use of a textbook-based curriculum may be inappropriate. Describe potential negative effects of this curriculum and how it is developmentally inappropriate to literacy development. Recommend an alternative approach to developing literacy skills.
In your letter, use the kindergarten standards from your state and the guidelines for DAP described in the course text as well as in NAEYC resources.

The paper should be two to three pages addition to the reference page. Use at least one scholarly reference in addition to your text. Your paper should also be formatted according to APA style.

This week you have your first written assignment for the course. For this assignment you will be assuming the role of a parent who is concerned about the new state-mandated, textbook-based curriculum that is being implemented in kindergarten. To express your
concerns about the new state-mandated curriculum, you will need to write a letter that addresses several key points. Below are some tips to help you as you write your work on your written assignment this week.

  • Format – The format for this assignment is a letter and therefore should include the parts of a letter.
  • Audience – The intended recipient of your letter is the school board. You will want to keep this in mind as you are creating the content for your letter.
  • Content – In your letter, you need to address the key ideas below:
    • Define DAP – What does Developmentally Appropriate Practice, or DAP, mean? Make sure to explain DAP in your own words. You can always refer back to the DAP resources in the Week 1 Guidance if you need help with this.
    • Benefits of DAP – What are the benefits of DAP? Try to include at least three reasons why DAP is beneficial. This will provide you with a strong basis for why you feel the way that you do. Also, consider using some research here to support
      your thoughts.
    • Using the Textbook – In this section you are talking about why you feel using a textbook-based curriculum is inappropriate. You will want to provide specific reasons as to why you feel it is inappropriate. In order to support your beliefs,
you should consider bringing in some outside research to support your thoughts.
    • Potential Negative Effects – How could using this textbook-based curriculum negatively impact students and their literacy development? That is the question you are trying to answer here. Make sure to provide specific ideas about the negative
impacts a textbook-based curriculum could have on literacy development. Again, bringing in research will help to validate the points you are making.
    • Alternative Approach – What type of approach do you want to see used? What are some developmentally appropriate approaches to developing literacy skills? Remember you are arguing against the textbook-based curriculum and for an approach
      that is developmentally appropriate.
  • Resources – In your assignment you should use the kindergarten standards from your state, the guidelines for DAP shared in the text, and NAEYC to support your ideas. You can always include other resources, but these are the minimum
