– The first line of your review must be a bibliographical citation of your book. This citation replaces the more typical title.

– Your bibliographical citation MUST be for the edition you actually used.

– DO NOT CITE THE 1906 EDITION UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.

– Always underline or italicize the title of a book.

– italicize every citation of the title

– The first paragraph must be a biography of the author explaining why he is an expert in the subject matter of this book.

The remainder of the review should contain the following elements, probably as a paragraph for each element.

A statement of the type of book (monograph, biography, novel, etc.) and the scope of the work. (What is the author trying to accomplish? What is the thesis of this work?)

A concise summary of the material covered. (Remember, one paragraph per element)

An analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the book, the outstanding ideas, theories, arguments, or qualities of the book. You should support your analysis with examples from the book.

The personal judgment of the reviewer (you) concerning the success of the author in conveying his message and the value of the book for other readers.

Any review that exceeds four pages loses two points. If you omit any of the above elements you lose two points per element.

Lastname, Firstname. Title of the Book You Are Reviewing (City , Publisher, Date of Publication) 435 pp. The first paragraph of any book review for Keith King is a biography of the author . Dr. Lastname was born in a hospital so he could be near his mother . He studied underwater basket weaving from the Fresh Water Hopi tribe and lived with them for many years. It was with the Hopi that he discovered the Mayan prophecies mentioned in this book. Every paragraph needs at least five sentences. Dr . Lastname is an expert in the Mayan prophecies written in this book. Dr . Lastname believes that the end of the world will occur on December 12, 2012. If this hapapens then you will never need to write another book review for Dr . King. If this does not happen then you need to know how to write a book review for Dr . King. Lastname covers this principle in chapters seven and eight. This book also contains lots ofinformationaboutHopicraftssuchaspotteryandrugweaving. Thenumbersatthe end of the parenthesis in the title of this book review refers to the number of pages in the book that is being reviewed. Lastname always writes academic work in the third person. This is a principle of historical writing and I think it makes Lastname a better author . Dr. King lets students write in the first person using the words “I” or “me” because he realizes his students have other events in their life. This is a bad example for Dr . King’s students and real college history teachers will grade down when a formal paper is written in the first person. After you have read this book review, Dr . King will expect you to keep all academic work in the third person. To make certain the reader understands this sample, the numbers at the end of the parenthesis in the title are the number of pages in the book that is being reviewed. One of the positive elements in Title of the Book You Are Reviewing is the short declarative sentences. Most of the sentences are not compound sentences. Dr . King likes the style of Ernest Hemingway so Dr . King chose Dr. Lastname’s book for his students to read. If you want to major in creative writing you might want to look at other books for examples of prose, but Lastname’ s monograph, which is a book written about one subject, is a good example of academic style. Academic style relies on clear , short sentences. A negative element in this book is that the author wasted 435 pages with this volume. When deciding on books to require for an under graduate class, do not chose Title of the Book Y ou Are Reviewing. Instead William Kelleher Storey’ s W riting History: A Guide For Students. Storey’ s work is easier to read, has clear examples, and costs less than the Lastname’ s volume. T itle of the Book You Are Reviewing is so boring it could be adapted as an opera by Phillip Glass or given to students to cure insomnia. Dr . King must be receiving kickbacks from the publisher to make his students buy this book.
