There is a number of preparations a learner will need to be successful at this level of education (Elsasser et al., 2020). Everything you have done in the past has prepared you for this next step, but areas that may have been easy in prior bachelor’s and master’s programs, such as writing and research will require greater attention because of the depth of analysis necessary to conduct a doctoral-level research project. At each stage of the doctoral journey the expectations to move toward being an independent and self-motivated increase (Elsasser et al., 2020). Along with the academic responsibility of course expectations, learners should be improving reading, writing, and research skills (Elsasser et al., 2020). To be successful, students are expected to become proficient technology users (Jacobs & Greenberger, 2020). In the beginning, most learners are novice researchers, but through hard work, many learners will make the transition from a student completing homework assignments to a researcher conducting research. Therefore, learners can expect multiple personal, emotional, and academic challenges (Smith, 2020).This part of the process that most learners experience on the way to becoming an independent scholar contributing to their field of study. This means that outside of the classroom students should be making strides to meet the dissertation milestones (Elsasser et al., 2020) and transition to an independent researcher (Smith, 2018). What do you see as a challenge to adjusting to the emotional expectations of the doctoral journey?
